Why is edge of a rain cloud glay?

I can understand that a big and thick rain cloud is gray and dark, but couldn't understand that edge of a rain cloud is still gray.
Both of a white cloud and a rain cloud is same vapor.
For this my tiny question, "Absorbance" can be a good tool.
All of materials has their own absorbance of light.
Therefore we can see differences with colors and measure solutes in a solution.
The size of CCNs are deference between a white could and a rain cloud.
That's why CCNs of a rain cloud absorb more light and their color look more dark.
To look up the sky means to measure components of the air with sun light.
