TETSURO OIKE

　 きゅうりが床に落ちて折れた。 「きゅうりはくっつくよ。」 そばの人が教えてくれた。 くっつけたら、翌日元通りくっついていた。 この驚異的な「強さ」。 細胞壁のおかげだろう、と思った。 人の指は容易にくっつかない。 動物の細胞はバイキンやウイルスにめっぽう弱いから、 すぐにかさぶたでふたをしなければならないからだ。 ところが植物は分厚い細胞壁を持っている。 ウイルスに冒されても、すぐには拡がらない。 だから修復も可能なのではないか。 動物は弱い。特に我々人間は弱い。 がびょうを踏んだらもう大変だ。大声を上げてのたうちまわる。 その小さな穴からバイキンが侵入するかもしれないのだ。 きゅうりは、のたうちまわらない。別にどうってことないからだ。 　 I dropped a cucumber on the floor and that was broken to two pieces. "It will be one piece again. Try." Somebody said. Tomorrow, I found the cucumber that became one piece again. I thought cell wall would be one of the reasons of this surprising phenomenon. Human being is really weak. We can not cure our fingers by ourselves. Our cell membrane is too thin to protect our body against virus. Plants have thick cell wall. They have enough time to cure their wound, even big wound. We fear even a small pushpin on the floor. Because just only small wound might become an entrance for virus. くしゃみ、せき、鼻水。 これらは不随意運動と呼ばれるが、 もともと体を支配する遺伝子の立場からすると、 任せておけない運動、と表現できる。 遺伝子はこれらの運動を私たちに任せていない。 なぜか。 それは私たちがあきれるほど判断ミスを犯すからである。 たとえばレストランで私たちはくしゃみをこらえようとするが、 いままさに体がウイルスに冒されようとしているときに、周囲に気をつかっている場合ではない。 鼻と口から、ありったけの爆風でもって粘液とウイルスを放出させないといけないのである。 これをこらえて歯が折れてしまう悲劇に見舞われた人を私は知っている。 では判断ミスを犯さない様になれば、こうした運動も私たちに任せてくれるのだろうか。 おそらくそうはならない。遺伝子は我々を不完全な動物にしておいたほうが安泰だからだ。 Sneeze, cough, and a runny nose. We call them Involuntary actions. From DNA's point of view, however, it must be called own action which they don't leave it to us. In short, they don't believe us. Why? Because we often make a mistake against their expectations. For instance, we sometimes try to stop our sneeze or cough at a quiet restaurant. DNA can not believe this fool attitude. They have to splash virus immediately out of our mouse and nose by its blast. I know a disaster of a person who chipped his tooth because of trying to stop his sneeze or cough.
